Debajehmujig Theatre Project

Back

Debajehmujig 1In Partnership with Kaleidoscope Arts in Education Programs, students at the Watt Public School in the Muskoka Lakes Region worked with four animators from Manatoulin Island's Debajehmujig Theatre Project to create two performances for National Aboriginal Day.

While Grade 4 and 5 students created a Stomp-style performance using instruments such as shakers, dowels and cowbells, Grade 6 students produced a dramatic presentation of the Ojibway creation story for which they made all of their own costumes and props.

Students had the opportunity to present their performances to both their parents and community members at their school as well as to resort guests at the Red Leaves Resort in Minett where they also participated in a performance by the Singing Birds from nearby Wahta First Nation.

Debajehmujig 4Said one Debajehmujig animator, "It's great to see kids who are really shy on the first day, spend two weeks with them and then they're onstage in front of their community performing! It's rewarding for us to see that. We get to cover cultural history, music, theatre, dance, and the teachers continue after we've left."
